- Political Action Committees funded by George Soros and personal injury trial lawyers are prominent financial supporters of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee
- Led by former Obama Attorney General Eric Holder, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee is helping lead efforts to oppose Texas’ proposed Congressional redistricting plan
- Holder has said Texas’ redistricting proposal is “a danger to our democracy.”
As Texas House Democrats make national news for their decision to break quorum to obstruct the passage of a new Congressional redistricting map, campaign finance records show that one of the leading groups working to thwart Republican redistricting efforts has received significant funding from George Soros and personal injury trial lawyers.
The National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which is led by former Obama Attorney General Eric Holder, has been at the forefront of efforts to defeat Republican-backed redistricting efforts in Texas and other states.
According to campaign finance data from the Federal Election Commission, the George Soros-funded Democracy PAC donated $500,000 to the National Democratic Redistricting Committee earlier this year. The political arm of the American Association for Justice, a national trade association for personal injury trial lawyers, has donated $50,000 to the National Democratic Redistricting Committee so far this year.
Holder and the National Democratic Redistricting Committee have been vocal in their opposition to the proposed Texas Congressional redistrict plan, which could see Republicans flip as many as five districts next year.
Appearing on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” on Sunday, Holder characterized the Texas redistricting proposal as a “danger to our democracy.”
“I think we have to understand that the nature of the threat that has been put upon the country, through what they’re trying to do in Texas, has really increased the danger to our democracy. And, as a result of that, we’ve got to do things that perhaps in the past I would not have supported. This is an authoritarian move by the White House to try to make sure that they can rig the election, the midterm elections, in 2026,” Holder told Stephanopoulos.
Last month, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee held an online event entitled “Stop the Texas Takeover”, featuring Holder, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Congressman Greg Casar, and Texas House Democratic Caucus Chairman Gene Wu. During the event, the speakers promoted efforts to oppose the Texas redistricting proposal.
The American Association for Justice, which advocates for the interests of personal injury trial lawyers, also has a long history of supporting liberal politicians and causes. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are among the prominent Democrats who have received campaign contributions from the American Association for Justice’s political action committee so far this year.
In addition to donating to the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, the American Association for Justice Political Action Committee has also made donations to a host of other liberal organizations this year. These include American Bridge 21st Century, the House Majority PAC, Emily’s List, Voices for Equal Justice PAC, the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC.
The American Association for Justice has also been openly hostile to the Trump administration. In an op-ed published earlier this year, Linda Lipsen, the Chief Executive Officer of the American Association for Justice, wrote, “The Trump administration’s attacks on the judiciary and lawyers undermine the rule of law and our Constitution. At this time, perhaps more than ever, with the federal government slashing programs intended to protect the public, trial lawyers must continue to provide a safety net. AAJ and the state associations must continue working in partnership to address the challenges we face.”
Donors to the American Association for Justice Political Action Committee include numerous prominent Texas personal injury trial lawyers, including many members of the Texas Trial Lawyers Association’s Board of Directors. On its website, the Texas Trial Lawyers Association says it “partners with [the American Association for Justice] to serve our Texas members.”
James Fields, who oversees the Texas Trial Lawyers Association’s political and lobbying efforts as its Chief Officer of Public Affairs, is also a donor to the American Association for Justice Political Action Committee.
Redistricting is not the only instance where George Soros and personal injury trial lawyers have joined forces to fight President Trump and other Republicans. The Texas Voice has previously reported that Soros and Texas trial lawyers helped fund an effort through the First Tuesday PAC that encouraged voters to “Stop MAGA Republicans” and “Vote for Every Democrat” last year.
Recent campaign finance reports show that personal injury trial lawyers are gearing up to influence Republican Primary elections next year. Democrat personal injury trial lawyers Kurt Arnold and Jason Itkin launched the Texans for Truth and Liberty PAC earlier this year with a $10 million donation from their law firm. Political contributions made by Arnold and Itkin’s Texans for Truth and Liberty PAC so far this year indicate that they hope to play kingmaker in upcoming Republican primaries.
