A left-wing non-profit that has received funding from George Soros’ Open Society Foundation has partnered with Harris County to provide free voter engagement events.
Pursuant to a Memorandum of Understanding in place with Harris County, Mi Familia en Accion “agrees to provide free workshops and events for Voter Engagement, Voter Registration, Citizenship, and Environmental Justice. These workshops and events will provide engagement in the community and in various regions in Precinct 4, while educating voters on the importance of voting and civic engagement. This outreach aims to serve all Houstonians and focus on uplifting Latino voices.”
Democrat Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones, who represents Harris County Precinct 4, brought forward the agenda item that approved Mi Familia en Accion providing these events in her precinct. Briones faces Republican Steve Radack, who served as a Harris County Commissioner from 1988-2020, in the November General Election.
Under the agreement, Mi Familia en Accion agreed to provide a minimum of 12 “workshops or events for Voter Engagement, Voter Registration, Citizenship, and Environmental Justice” to be held at County facilities in Briones’ district. Briones’ office agreed to “Provide and schedule adequate meeting space, including tables and chairs, at Precinct 4 Community Centers to ensure sufficient accommodations are available for each workshop or event during the scheduled time” and “Distribute marketing materials and assist with recruitment of participants.”
In 2023, Mi Familia en Accion (then known as Mi Familia Vota Education Fund) received a $500,000 grant from George Soros’ Foundation to Promote Open Society “to provide general support.”
Mi Familia en Accion has been highly critical of Republican leaders.
In a Spanish-language website opposing Texas’ Congressional redistricting last year, Mi Familia en Accion said, “Texas Governor Greg Abbott is sacrificing our freedoms and futures in exchange for power and President Trump’s political agenda. The Governor is rigging our voting maps to give the President more seats in Congress to stay in power and silence voters.”
“We need leaders who put the Texans first, not the political agenda of a tyrant,” the website also reads.
The organization has publicly opposed border security efforts supported by President Trump and Congressional Republicans.
“Across the country, Latino families, workers, and small business owners are living in fear as mass deportation policies disrupt communities and hurt local economies. Congress should not hand ICE a blank check without accountability, transparency, and protections for civil rights. Our communities deserve investment in opportunity and safety — not more fear and chaos,” said Angelica Razo, National Director of Campaigns and Programs of Mi Familia en Accion, in astatement released by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus opposing Republican-led efforts to fund immigration enforcement.
Mi Familia en Accion was also vocally opposed to the Laken Riley Act, which was signed into law by President Trump last year. The legislation requires the mandatory detention of illegal immigrants who are charged with certain crimes.
“The Laken Riley Act is yet another example of how the wealthy corporate class and the politicians they’ve bought try to distract and divide the public while they secure the profits they can make by persecuting immigrant and working class communities, including U.S. citizens of any racial background,” said Mi Familia Vota Texas State Director Dayana Iza.
