Fact Check: Wesley Hunt’s Voting History

U.S Senate Candidate Didn’t Vote in 2016 Election, Admitted to Voting for Hillary Clinton in 2008 Democrat Primary

Since GOP Congressman Wesley Hunt announced his candidacy for the United States Senate last month, various allegations about his voting history have been made by his critics. In this installment of Texas Fact Check, The Texas Voice examines some of the questions surrounding Wesley Hunt’s voting history.

Hunt Claimed to Support President Trump in 2016, But Did Not Vote in the 2016 Election

In an interview last month with Jack Fink on CBS News Texas’ “Eye on Politics” program, Hunt was asked by Fink about claims that he did not vote for President Trump in either the 2016 primary or general elections. Hunt responded by saying, “That’s a boldfaced lie. I’ve been supporting President Trump since 2016, and I have the proof.”

The Texas Voice independently researched voting records from Harris County, where Hunt resides, and verified that Hunt did not vote in the 2016 General Election. The voting history records indicate that Hunt voted in the 2008 Democrat Primary and General Election, but did not vote again in Harris County until the 2018 General Election. Hunt’s first vote in a Republican Primary was in 2020, when he ran for Congress for the first time.

Hunt Admitted to Having “No Regrets” About Voting for Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democrat Primary

During a candidate forum during his 2020 campaign for the Republican nomination for Congressional District 7, candidates were asked when they had last voted in a Primary Election and for which Party. Jeremy Wallace of the Houston Chronicle reported on the forum, where Hunt acknowledged that his most recent vote in a Primary Election at that time was in the 2008 Democrat Primary.

Wallace noted that Hunt said that he had no regrets over his vote for Clinton.

Hunt’s voting history has been an issue in his previous campaigns. In a February 22, 2020 post on his Big Jolly Politics blog, David Jennings reported that Houston conservative activist Dr. Steven Hotze rescinded his endorsement of Hunt after learning that Hunt had never voted in a Republican Primary despite having voted in the 2008 Democrat Primary.

“Hunt now claims that he was part of Rush Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos”, which doesn’t make sense at all since Hunt has missed Republican primaries in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. If he was a committed Republican, why miss those primaries?” wrote Jennings.
